Design engineer

August 12, 2024

Frontend is visual, visual is interface, and interface is design.

There’s a fine line between a front-end developer and an user interface designer.

I found myself right between these two worlds, feeling like a true hybrid. I never wanted to choose one over the other. I wanted both.

Design Engineer is a developer with a good eye for design and a love for details, much like a designer. They can bridge the gap between design and code. They are hybrids: sometimes they need designers to help build a product; other times, they take on the task of prototyping a solution themselves. Many of them prefer to create prototypes directly in code, which helps everyone better understand what the final product will be.

I always loved both design and programming. Choosing between the two felt like asking a parent to choose their favorite child (something they would never do, even if deep down, they knew the answer).

I want more and more to combine engineering with design. I want to focus on micro-interactions, accessibility, and details that would make users want to keep coming back to the product.
